SOME STUFFS: Digital Leather signed to Fat Possum, head on tour

free image hosting

Digital Leather originally started out as a one-man project by Shawn Foree, but then things got out of hand, but for the better. Seems to be a repeat occurrence in his life, at least according to his bio, which I extract from here in style:

Foree was raised on a Baha’i hippie commune in the wilds of southern Arizona, where he went to college for 19th Century American Lit and other mind-expanding activities. It was there that he honed his skill at writing darkly infectious songs: pounding drums, moody vocals, squelching vintage synths and undeniably catchy hooks that attracted the attention of garage rock superstar Jay Reatard, who now manages the band. The songs on this album seem somewhat lo-fi, but the songwriting is impeccable; the tracks could sound just as at home on an acoustic guitar as they do with a full band. This album feels like garage-rock from the dark side, a complex, genre-bending puzzle that is immediately listenable.

By extracting this, it doesn’t mean I’m lazy and couldn’t do a re-write, but it’s the perfect way to describe what he does, or what happens when “he” becomes “they” as Digital Leather are now a full band. As a band, (t)he(y) is/are now signed to Fat Possum Records, who will be releasing the debut album (t)he(y) call/calls Warm Brother. Digital Leather seem to be adventurous types, and I believe as Foree gets loose and fancy free, his band members will be showing their own styles too, which you can do when they head to a city near you. Okay, so you probably are wondering “if I’m going to see these guys, I want to know what they sound like”. As you can see by this view, they seem to revive the aura of bands like The Cramps, The Mummies, The Buzzcocks, and some British guy with jet black oily hair. Pick and choose who you want to compare them too, but listen to their reality, a nice reality at that.

REVIEW: T.O.K.’s “Our World”

free image hosting A few year ago when Sean Paul blew up big outside of Jamaica, T.O.K. came out using one of the riddims he did and released the great “Galang Gal”. Since then the group have taken off, recorded full albums and for me their music has always ended up with mixed results. The same can be said for their new one, Our World (VP).

In the last decade, a number of Jamaican artists have taken to the music coming out of the U.S. more than ever before, which means there’s more R&B and pop flavor in their music, but that’s not really anything knew. Ska and reggae artists have always taken hints of jazz, soul, and even country, but when Jamaican artists did it, it would end up sounding as if they themselves created it. You can’t take the island out of T.O.K. but it sounds like nothing more than R&B with island flavor and what keeps them from blowing up big is the fact that their music can get lost in the crowd.

In tracks like “Gangsters Never Die”, “Gimme Little (If You Want Me)”, and “Gyrate” they offer something for the ladies and also for those who live a ruffneck style, but they come off as boring, as if they’re told to do this because people love it. I don’t hear T.O.K. at all, anyone from Cherine Anderson to Tami Chynn to Mr. Vegas could’ve done something over these exact songs and probably would have done a lot better. Auto-Tune? Please kill the madness, it sounds like ass already.

But the productions are incredible, and I hope all of them will branch out and do a lot more, but knowing how the Jamaican music industry works, they probably have 20 albums worth of works on file. Some of the people on this album include Arif “Supacoop” Cooper, Chester Walker, Mario “Mad Scientist” Lawrence, Rohan “Jah Snocone” Fuller, X.C.A.R., Karim “DJ Karim” Thompson, Craig “Leftside” Parkes, and others. I probably would have liked this album if it had better songs. It’s not T.O.K. that’s the problem, but it’s just the songs are garbage. The only exception is when Beenie Man joins them for “Miss World”, but that’s 12 songs into the album. It may be their world, but it seems a bit stagnant in there.
