REVIEW: Kenny & Leah’s “You and the Night and the Music”
The back cover of this CD says “too bad there is not a Grammy for heart and soul. They would surely scoop it up.” That heart can be heard on Kenny & Leah‘s new CD, You and the Night and the Music (K&L).
They play pop-flavored jazz, with Leah getting all sensual on us, making us melt while Kenny’s sax work will make fans of Phil Woods and Michael Brecker want to hear more of his work. Leah’s silky touch in songs like “Dancing In The Dark” ,”The Look Of Love”, “Popsicle Toes”, and “Let’s Fall In Love” is downright obscene, or at least as obscene as you want. In other words, she oozes sexiness but all of that is in the mind and of course the ears, and the way she goes back and forth with the saxophone is just… you just want to turn away and perhaps take a sly peak at what’s going on. But again, it’s all in the mind.
Their version of “The Look Of Love”… as many times as this song has been covered over the years, people will always go out of their way to give something extra, and if it takes this version for people to hear You and the Night and the Music, then take it and make it feel oh so good. There’s a good reason why Kenny is giving a sly grin on the back cover, and the music reveals only a hint. Listen closely… but try not to get too close, for they are making beautiful music together.
