REVIEW: Digital Leather’s “Warm Brother”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic With a cover like this, who can make an expectation? Here’s what I came up with. Digital Leather is a band that is one man, Shawn Foree. He has released a number of albums, but Warm Brother is his first for Fat Possum Records.

Digital Leather’s sound is a mixture of almost every style of pop and rock David Bowie has gone through in his career, so Bowie fans will find DL to be of interest. What you get out of his music though is a keep love of pop and songwriting. The lyric that hit me first can be found in “Photo Lie”, where he says “Jesus was just a photograph, but you gave him a crown”, all while layered within a wall of production that combines distorted guitars and drums pushed up into the mix. Bowie yes, maybe a bit of Jello Biafra‘s cynicism, and yet there’s an earthiness in his lyrics that could transform them into folk songs. Some of these songs will also appeal to fans of the indie Minneapolis sound from the late 80′s/early 90′s, where you may hear the crispiness of The Replacements but lathered with keyboards both friendly and unfriendly.

Warm Brother is the true futuristic new wave that new wave wanted to become in 30 years, that time is now. What I also like is the pace of the songs, most of which are performed in three minutes or less, no time to dwell, just rock out and move on.

SOME STUFFS: Mishon’s publicity photo

Sometimes the means of promotion goes overboard. Case in point: 16 year old singer/”songwriter” Mishon Ratliff. You may know him for his role in the ABC Family show Lincoln Heights but as a singer signed to Dynasty/Streamline/Interscope he wants to be known as Mishon. Fair enough.

If the name is familiar to some of you, he has had success recently with the songs “Just A Kiss” and now “Rock My Chain”. Which leads us to this promotional photo.

Mishon wants to show you how he rocks the chain, but unfortunately the Photoshop techniques are pretty bad. If a chain were to be that big, how would it look around his neck, or the recipient of the chain if he was to give it away as a gift? I truly hope his fans aren’t dumb enough to think this chain is real, because I think it’s bigger than him. Even Treach would say “damn, that’s a big chain.”
