OPINION: When Lady Gaga dominates, her knee grip wins
A new article at The Guardian looks at the phenomenon of Lady Gaga and questions her importance, yet by doing so, doesn’t that add to the phenomenon?
The person questioning her importance is social critic Camille Paglia, who basically says in reference to Gaga “How would a figure so calculated and artificial, so clinical and strangely antiseptic, so stripped of genuine eroticism have become the icon of her generation?” It was Paglia who praised Madonna for being advanced, but Madonna could not have done what she has done without some level of calculation? Being pop means being popular, and the need to be pop and remain popular means having to plan out your execution. Maybe Paglia is just older and doesn’t understand Gaga, or perhaps she doesn’t want anyone to acknowledge the dark side of our times (or the perceived dark times we are told we live in today.)
My interest in Lady Gaga is minimal, but the means of her promotion is due to pushing her persona to its perceived limits, but then going beyond that. I think she’s interesting because of her going beyond.
