FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD: Kathleen Hanna vs. Tyler The Creator “Cock Out”

Someone whom I follow on Twitter had retweeted an article on Pitchfork where Kathleen Hanna, vocalist for Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, was asked about her views on the hip-hop group Odd Future. I find it odd that Hanna was asked this question, but I think because of what she represented in the 1990′s as the focus of the Riot Grrl movement and people viewing and hearing Odd Future as sexist pigs, someone felt a need to know what Hanna’s views were.

As someone who was a part of my local punk scene for years, I am familiar with Bikini Kill. I know of Hanna as much more than someone who influenced Kurt Cobain to come up with a song title and as an extra in a Sonic Youth video, she wasn’t just a hot topic in Sassy magazine.

Now, I like what I’ve heard of Odd Future. As to what they represent, I’ll leave that up to the listener, fans, and non-fans. Hanna claims that if people think Odd Future are boring, don’t talk about them. That’s fine. Odd Future are known for lyrics that may be shocking, and yet Hanna was someone who was not afraid to speak her mind, and arguably those were shock tactics too. I think the only thing that could be done is to unite Kathleen Hanna and Tyler The Creator in a song.

Here is something I quickly put together called “Cock Out”. There’s the term “rock out with your cock out”, but Hanna might be the kind of person to say “I don’t like you, I wish I could tear your soul up and rip your cock out”, thus the title.
