REVIEW: Jamie Ousley’s “A Sea Of Voices”

Photobucket This is the kind of jazz that you can feel in the nunnies, and that’s a good thing. A Sea Of Voices is a brilliant album by Jamie Ousley, who is the leader and plays the double bass, but also has Joe Davidian (piano), Austin McMahon (drums & cajon), Carlomagna Araya (percussion), and Gabriel Saienz (piano) joining him for the mission. It is beautifully played and recorded, bringing to mind the music of Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, and Dave Brubeck in terms of style, class, and finesse. “Shenandoah” features vocalist Nanami Morikawa, who adds a verse in Japanese and it sounds incredible, emotional, and sad, definitely a highlight of the album. Her presence on the album is limited to one track, but it helps to slightly energize the listener to keep listening, although there’s no fear in that, A Sea Of Voices shines from start to finish.
