Hip-hop in its infancy never sounded like this, creating music “like this” was not the point. Since then, hip-hop has shown influence and potential, and now the music has been and remains a sponge that consumes anything and becomes… well, hip-hop. This is what Oddisee has done with his version of “You Know Who You Are” by making it an intimate performance with guitarist Olivier Daysoul. It’s just an electric guitar plugged into an amp and two voices. That’s it, and it works great, proving that “less is more” indeed.
If you like it, this recording is available as a free download (MP3 @ 320kbps) or FLAC lossless, which means you producers and DJ’s can mix/cut it up if you wish, or give it some radio airplay for you daring on-air announcers out there.
Oddisee released a new album yesterday called People Hear What They See (Mello Music Group), which is also available on vinyl. You can order the album (MP3, vinyl, or CD) via the Amazon boxes below.
You know the man, you love the man. You enjoy his music, you want to participate in his parties dedicated to fat chicks, this is completely fine. Diplo made an appearance on the NPR show All Things Considered today, and if you didn’t hear it, you are able to stream his segment by clicking here as he speaks on what he has planned with new music from… you’ll have to listen.
Tebuchet are a California indie pop quartet who write and perform some great music, incorporate an ‘ukulele without making people think “oh, novelty status”. The band just released their debut album for the Side With Us label The music is quite well down but you don’t have to believe me: you can download a track for free. They only have two scheduled shows this month, but with luck, this album will get some positive reviews, which will hopefully mean they’ll bring their music on the road.
Influential power pop band (and early MTV staple) Shoes are about to have their albums remastered and reissued by The Numero Group this year.
One by one, each album by Shoes will be released with all of the goodies that came with the original pressings of the album, including stickers, lyric sheets, inner sleeves, etc. These pressings are being remastered directly from the band’s own master tapes. For collectors and audiophiles who have bought reissues but did not like how the DAT conversions sounded, this will be a major upgrade. DAT conversions were limited to the technology and knowledge of the equipment at the time, and with audio remastering improving significantly in the last 20 years, this should be a treat.
Shoes were formed in Zion, Illinois in 1974, and with a small number of custom pressings to be sold directly to fans at nightclubs, they hustled to make sure they kept on playing and recording when they could. In time they were able to get the attention of Sire Records in the UK before getting picked up by Elektra. It was their time on Elektra that lead the band to create a few “promotional film clips”, thus becoming one of the first batch of artists to gain attention on a new cable network called MTV: Music Television.
After three albums, they were free agents and while not a massive success, they helped to spawn a generation or two of power pop bands, and their influence can be heard today.
The first Shoes album to be released will be 1976′s One In Versailles, due out in the fall. Every two months, Numero Group plans on reissuing a new title.
Shawn Lee uses so many masks and costumes, it’s hard to tell if he’s trying to be the music pseudonym king or if he’s into the marquis de sade, but you can enter this album without having to have a safe word. For Reel To Reel (Ubiquity), Lee is recording once again as Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra and if this comes off like one of those cherished library albums collectors and producers love, that was his point. You’ll hear funk, lounge… simply a mixed bag of leisure sounds that you can listen to as is or perhaps they may inspire you to create your own tracks. When you enter the realm of the Ping Pong Orchestra, you never know where inspiration may bounce next.
Reel To Reel is scheduled for release on July 17th.
