Hip-hop in Hawai’i right now should have the same kind of attention that various Canadian hip-hop scenes had in the mid to late 90′s, where everyone wanted to know what was the hot shit happening up north. In truth, if you are a fan of the music, there is no reason why you should hold yourself back from discovering new sounds from areas unknown, and that includes Hawai’i. I have shined the spotlight on his music because I like how Prie does his thing on the mic, and he’s doing it again with a brand new track called “We Fly Hi”, which has him with his live band, Sample, backing him up. This is the first episode of his brand new We Fly Hi video series, as he plans on serving up a new video every month.
I’m sure he’s more than up to doing a few collaborations so to get in touch with him, he’s on Twitter. Begin now. You can check out all of the videos he has posted on YouTube by ,a href=”http://www.youtube.com/user/hawaiirapperPRIE?feature=watch”>heading here.
Wordburglar is a Canadian MC who is true to his moniker. He takes up words and steals them to suit his own needs, and whether it’s a means to be nerdy, geeky, or simply dope, he will do it to make effective, sometimes humorous, and mighty fine sounds. On his third album, the appropriately titled 3rdburglar (Hand’solo), he displays the goods with songs that refer to everything from comic books to hidden breaks science fiction films. People who understand the references will eat this up immediately, but considering that much of this nerd info has become a bit more mainstream in the last decade or so, Wordburglar should be the rapper that everyone should fall in love with.
Even if you take away the “inner circle” references, this works on a number of levels. If you specifically look for white rappers, I find him to be effective as one of those guys who will test you with how much he knows, but also how well he does it. You might know of an overwhelming amount of rappers who celebrate Halifax, Nova Scotia to the fullest, but what he shows is a true love of the music and what makes its ingredients and elements work. He is a Canadian rapper, and while people in North America tend to be a bit fickle in who tries to represent in the country above, he is someone who is true to what defines him as a Canuck. In the end, his music will begin to simmer and one can listen to 3rdburglar as someone who enjoys what he does and will go out of his way to rock the mic because he knows how. Tracks like “Fred Broca”, “Sufficiently Suffonsified” and “Drawings With Words” are tales that will make listeners immediately visualize what he is saying, while also making you head nod and rock out. When a line is popped off and he makes you laugh, that’s a deliberate move. He understands the importance of humor and if there is any level of swagger or attitude in what he does, fans will feel it immediately. Naysayers will keep on listening for what makes his music hold up, and perhaps after hearing this over and over, they’ll question why they hated him in the first place. No hate whatsoever.
The last time fans had heard from Japan’s Mono, they released the brilliant album Holy Ground: NYC Live album, and that was in 2010.
The album commemorated their ten years as a band, but would they fade away and never come back. The answer is here:
This is a brief video showing the group recording new material for an album that will be released in the fall. The video was uploaded by the band themselves, so this isn’t some fan-driven wish, this is the real deal. Of course, a 2:34 video can’t possible hint at what is only being promoted as a “double LP”, which means a good amount of music awaits this fall.
Lockah has released a new EP on Jeffree’s/Mad Decent called When U Stop Feeling Like A Weirdo & Become A Threat, and it’s a free EP, which means… well, it’s free. When you click to the Soundcloud page, you are able to download the EP from there. Or I can be nice and just say click here. Free and legit, download without fear.
Watched this video, a simple “piano version” of “Spectrum” by Zedd and I thought “okay, now what?” That’s it? I want more. I realize I will not get any. Crap.
Alterbeats have been making the beat junkie rounds for awhile, and now the French production collective are about to release an album of their wares, and this is a morsel of what’s on it: a track featuring Sadat X, A.G., and Lion of the group Bordeaux.
The full album, called The French Revolution, will be released on June 26th.
You may be familiar with The Vettes but you may not have heard this remix of one of your favorite songs. This one was done by DJ Quickie Mart for the song “Walk Like Models”, and now you can get on the catwalk and strut it out.
You know what’s going to happen: people will find out about a band called Slug Guts, see their promotional photos and go “they look nothing like actual slug guts. I feel duped.” Well, that’s all on you, isn’t it? This is a band who call themselves Slug Guts, and who knows what it means besides… well, them? It doesn’t matter, because you’re reading this to find out about their new album. Sacred Bones Records will be releasing Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat, the cover of which looks like this. Quite cool.
You can listen to one of the songs called “Stranglin’ You Too”:
Want more? Stereogum.com have posted another song as a free download called “Adult Living”, which you can check out by heading here.
Slug Guts are already putting together a tour itinerary that will take them to a number of music festivals, so be on the lookout for that. Until then, you are able to pre-order Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat on vinyl, and CD (MP3 pre-order link not available but forthcoming) through Amazon by clicking the boxes below.
When I watched this video, I knew it all too well, for I am surrounded by people and neighborhoods that look exactly like this. No harm done, for this is the brand new video by Sixo called “Rocker John” and… did they do this about me? Eh… no, but Sixo did bring in LEIF(kolt) to share their radar love in a hip-hop fashion.
