BANDCAMP SUGGESTIONS: sAyAprAirs’ “Let’s Get Sued!”

Beats. It’s something that a lot of people enjoy hearing from hip-hop producers for different reasons. Some want to know if the music is good so that they can hire them for a recording session or two, or to buy a pre-made track. Others download whatever they can find so they don’t have to make their own productions and beats. Then there are those like myself who truly want to listen, as a means of taking in beat/production comprehension. I tend to like producers who go out of their way to go out of their way, or at least to distance themselves somewhat from the pack so that they aren’t making conveyor-belt music. The conveyor belt mentality works monetarily, but I want adventure or at least some sense you’re not trying to do what’s new and hip just to have familiarity or to make a hit. To my ears, sAyAprAirs is an adventurer.
sAyAprAirs (“say ya prayers”) says on his Bandcamp page that if you are looking for a “new sound”, you’ve come to the right place, so what makes him different? At least with Let’s Get Sued!, the tracks on this album are adventurous for its mixture of solid beats and spoken word soundbites, whether it’s from television news stories, movies or whatever it may be. At times it comes off a bit avant-garde, and not weird for the sake of of being weird, it sounds like he’s having fun what he’s doing and hopes others will be in tune with his formulas. He understands sound assembly from the inside out in that he knows what can rock, what can get people dancing and head nodding, but he’s going to take that and just mess with people’s assumptions of what they expect to hear. I can see how some will turn their heads away from something like this, but for those who find the avant-garde side of interest, they’ll see that sAyAprAirs is a part of a long line of “found sound” lovers who enjoys flirting with circuitry in order to please them. On the surface, it’s weird as you want it to be, but go into the sounds from a different entry way and you’ll hear something quite remarkable, if not simply original and interesting.
