BANDCAMP SUGGESTIONS: Buddy Peace’s “Buddy & Muddy & Wolf”
Out of the UK is Buddy Peace, whose work has been moving producers, record collectors, and beat junkies for a generation or two. As his Bandcamp page states, he has been opening “ears and eyes since 1980 – DJing since 1993 – Producing since 1997″. He has been active this year, and the latest (at least as I wrote this) is Buddy & Muddy & Wolf, a close-to-20 minute mix that focuses on the prime albums on Cadet Concept (a Chess Records subsidiary highlighting the labels’ more adventurous works, created by Marshall Chess) that made people then go “what the hell? This is not my blues!” but made a younger generation go “this is far out, I really love this.” In the end, that generation who were wowed would eventually make it become a core of hip-hop production for a few years, including Chuck D. and DJ Muggs. Those albums were Muddy Waters’ Electric Mud and Howlin Wolf’s The Howlin Wolf Album (a/k/a This is Howlin’ Wolf’s new album. He doesn’t like it. He didn’t like his electric guitar at first either.).
This is produced from well over 750 chops of both albums combined, and when you hear how Buddy Peace pulls everything together, you might think Muddy and Wolf were down with hip-hop back in 1969. If you have these two albums in your collection and always found it a means of inspiration, listen to what Buddy Peace did with it. Excellent.
