REVIEW: Allah-Las’ self-titled debut
Allah-Las have released their debut album on Innovative Leisure, and if you’ve been looking for a new and young band that sound like a mixture of 60′s British invasion rock’n'roll with a punch of surf music and garage rock, make yourself a believer of Allah-Las. They are a California band who very much show their upbringing in their music. Yes, while any and all musicians are more than capable of showing their love of music through their musicianship, some of the tracks on here sound like the kind of songs you’d hear in obscure surf films from the 1960′s, especially the instrumentals Other tracks have them sound like the non-hits from the Rolling Stones, The Animals, and The Yardbirds which are all rich with American blues and folk. Does this mean we have an American band who sounds like British bands who sound like their influences from the United States? If you want to interpret it that way, then yes, but while it may come off like being retro for retro sake, there’s a nice feel to this that shows they enjoy what they’re doing. Also, am I hearing the start of a tape machine, where the tape drags for a few milliseconds before getting back to its proper speed? YES!
