VIDEO: Solange’s “Losing You”

A few days ago, Solange released a video for her new track “Losing You” and a small handful of people in my timeline were talking about the merit of the video vs. what was being hyped and publicized more. If I’m to interpret those comments, it seemed people who listened to the song and watched the video were hoping it would get more attention than it was at the time. In a time and place where we’re almost expected to react quickly (or before it happens) over anything and everything, I think this is one of those times where you could question it, but it might lead to over hype and over-analysis. Things need to simmer, or the pace of things are there for a reason.

Maybe I’m speaking foolishly, but now that you’re here: hear (and watch). The song has a cool vibe to it, almost merging different styles of soul from every five years, from a pinch of funk to a slice of disco, a cut of hip-hop to wherever you want it to be. Is there a message to this video, which was shot in Cape Town, South Africa? If you want to see it that way, sure, because a video like this probably could not have been shot 25 years ago. You may see some of the imagery in this video and relate it to Janet Jackson’s “Got Til It’s Gone” in terms of symbolism or… you could just listen to it and think of the now. Nonetheless, Solange is partying in the pool, she’s dancing in the stadium. Honor the now but never lose touch of what was before. Or just look at it as a well shot and edited video.
