BEST OF 2012: My favorite music videos of the year

Let me say this off the top: this is not a list of every single music video that was made in 2012. Making a video is now the norm these days, and at times the amount of videos I have a chance in posting is overwhelming. What this is is a listing of my favorites of music videos I have seen and enjoyed. It could be due to the artist, it could be due to the song, it could be a mixture of both, plus some visuals that I found pleasing to my eyes and thus the mind. I did not have a specific video I felt was the absolute best, but I felt these stood out for whatever reason.

VIDEO: Shmu’s “Pool Party (Place 4 Us)”

If more parties were like this, I would attend them all. Or so Shmu wants you to believe, and who wouldn’t want some random liquids thrown on them? I would, and he shows us how daring he is musically and visually with “Pool Party (Place 4 Us)”, the third single from his Discipline/Communication album (my review can be found here.)

REVIEW: Shmu’s “Discipline/Communication”

Photobucket Sam Chown is one half of the duo Zorch, but with him making music as Shmu, fans are going to discover additional aspects of his already developed sound. Perhaps fans will say “I already knew this was in him, I was just waiting for the rest of the world to get it.”

Chown’s debut album as Shmu is called Discipline/Communication (Grand Theft Zamboni), and as a musician/singer/songwriter who is self-contained, he has no one to blame but himself, but I also have to blame him for making a damn good set of songs. As I’m listening to this, it reminds me of the kind of music one might hear in a surf movie or video, or in that sub-genre known as “stoner surf”. Some songs like “Happiness” is acoustic with a drum machine going on, so it’s lo-fi electro funk that may or may not have been recorded over a Dan Fogelberg 8-track over. Then you have stuff that is very indie rock-friendly, and a few minutes later, there’s a bit of electronica/IDM. I’m thinking how cool this is to come from one person, and that he can easily create something that has a California vibe while other songs have the feel of a California basement with the stench of discarded burritos and ass. Then in a track like “&hearts” (free download), he samples himself and chops if off, as if he agreed for Jan Jelinek or BVDUB to remix his work.

Photobucket In a twisted way, this is not too far from the first Foo Fighters album, which was Dave Grohl playing everything because he could. Here, Shmu puts together these sounds that can fit any and all moods, so if you want something abstract like a BBC library album from Delia Derbyshire (listen to “Floatin’ Oculus” for the reference), you can have that. If you want some alterna- rock madness, you have “Dangerous Passion“. If you like your music varied, going anywhere and everywhere (sometimes all at once), Discipline/Communication is your album.

VIDEO: Shmu’s “&hearts

As Shmu, musician Sam Chown plans on doing something different from the music people know him for as a member of Zorch, and this is a partial example. “&hearts” sounds like he simply had a bunch of cool sounds placed in front of him, but he said “let’s put it in the sample, completely cut it up beyond recognition, and make this work in a twisted way.” It reminds of a cross between Forss, Tobacco, and Realistic. To make it more interesting, try to create a visual equivalent. Just like the song has “found sound”, this has “found video” from a random assortment of sights from unknown home video sources. Fix your tracking, unpause, and listen/watch this/that.

Looking forward to hearing more? Grand Theft Zamboni Records will be releasing the Discipline/Communication album on June 5th. You don’t have to wait, for you are able to stream and listen to it in full via Bandcamp

Fans of the duo Zorch will know who Sam Chown is, but are you familiar with Shmu? If not, fear not, for Chown and Shmu are one and the same.

As Shmu, he will be releasing his debut album under the name, called Discipline/Communication (Grand Theft Zamboni), and what you see above is the first single from it. The press release states the album is a “melodic exploration into combinations of pop, shoegaze, glitch, psych and experimental rock”, and even with this one song, you will hear these things and the tendency to be open to go elsewhere. I’m in it for the “elsewhere” factor.

Plus, you can’t help but love someone who makes music like this, with hints of Todd Rundgren, Beck, Rolling Stones, Flaming Lips heard, and doesn’t mind going to a carnival dressed in his pajamas, looking for the perfect beat. It may surprise fans of Zorch, but it seems Shmu is ready to gain a following to share another side of his musical creativity.

The album is scheduled for release on June 5th.
